Kalman Radvanyi is a master of the ancient art of wood marquetry. He is recognized worldwide for extraordinary creativity and imagery combined with the precision and skill with which he executes the details. Born in 1976 in Budapest, into a family of painters and master craftsmen, Kalman grew up in his father’s workshop experimenting with small pieces of wood veneers, or timbers, and arranging them like a puzzle to create an image. By age 12, Kalman had already won several awards in leading art shows. Each of his creations can contain up to a thousand pieces of natural timbers sourced from dozens of countries around the world. Every piece of wood is precisely hand cut and individually inserted one by one. Each masterpiece may take up to six months to complete, incorporating up to 130 species of natural timbers, some of which are over a thousand years old. Kalman’s work is in some of the most prestigious private and public collections in the world, including that of the Queen of England and the Governments of Hungary and Australia. You can view his masterpieces at Lahaina Galleries in The Shops at Wailea.
