Island of Maui

Ulupalakua is also the home of MauiWine. Tedeschi Vineyards offers one of the Islands' most enticing products--wines that carry the essence of Hawaii, the spirit of Maui. Visitors to MauiWine can sample these unique wines in the tasting room located in the King's Cottage. This guest cottage was built specifically for the celebrated visit of King Kalakaua in April of 1874. The cottage has been beautifully restored and offers a history room with information about the long traditon of cattle ranching in Hawaii and more about the area's illustrious past. The winery tour, at 10:30 am and 1:30 pm, points out, among other picturesque sights, the chimneys of the old sugar mill. A ruin from Captain Makee's empire, it was restored and transformed into a quirky residence by local artist Reems Mitchell while he toiled on the lifelike characters you see inhabiting the lanais of the store and tasting room. The tour not only gives you a guided walk through the former Makee estate and its astounding arboreal legacy, but a glimpse into the making of the tropical wines offered by the winery.
