Island of Big Island

Growing up on the Big Island of Hawai‘i on one of the original sugar plantations, Vivian Ursula Bratton’s art is enriched by intermingling the past and present cultures of Hawai‘i and its unique landscapes. With the use of shapes, color, and the layering of textures and patterns, these elements represent the multi-cultural layers in Hawai‘i. In her prints, Vivian combines the traditional Japanese printing methods with contemporary use of present day cultural images, at times adding multimedia techniques within. As a multimedia artist using printmaking, pastel and acrylic, she strives to capture the spirit and sense of the place or subject to create from the heart.
